Candida overgrowth is most commonly thought of as a women’s concern. In these cases it is referred to as vaginal thrush or vaginal yeast infections, and irritation which some women experience chronically. What many people do not know is that this is only one of the possible symptoms of the disease, which often has its roots in the digestive system and then begins to affect the vagina.

chronic candida
The causes are varied, ranging from excessive intake of yeast, sugar, chlorine, magnesium, antibiotics, or sometimes due to stress and lack of nutrients. This makes it a tricky condition to avoid, and also that the condition does not always produce the same effects as each body varies and the same substance can have different effects.

Symptoms can be very varied and both men and women can find themselves suffering form the condition. The symptoms can have both a physical and psychological aspect, ranging from gastrointestinal problems, itching, fluid retention, insomnia, to depression, rashes and headaches.

However this condition can be very difficult to control with  chemical drugs, because fundamentally it derives from imbalances which often be managed more effectively through diet and supplementation. First off, it is very important to eliminate substances which promote the overgrowth of yeasts, especially sweets, sodas, simple sugars (products containing white flour), alcohol (especially beer and hard liquor) and milk products (with the exception of probiotic containing yogurts and kefirs). These substances allow Candida to flourish. You may also want to look into probiotic supplements, which help to maintain a healthy bacterial balance in your gut.  A health practitioner specializing in nutrition or alternative medicine can advise you of the best treatment plan for your condition.

Alternative and organic foods may begin to take on a great importance in your diet as you acquire new habits and a new awareness of how to eat. The only downside is that your visits to shops with organic products may increase the price of diet.

Of course in countries such as Germany, organic products have spread to the cheaper supermarkets, making them more accessible to all audiences. If you want to taste the pleasures of a healthier food intake, rent apartments in Berlin , you will not have to choose between health and money.

Carsten Höller was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1961. From  November 5th to February 6th 2011 we will have the opportunity to see his work at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum in Berlin.

carsten holler berlin

Carsten received his doctorate in biology and his art work reflects this, and is especially interested in the connection between science and human relations. His work has been exhibited in international museums of Buenos Aires, Milan and London, among other cities

In this exhibition Carsten uses Soma, an Indian drink considered sacred by Vedic Brahmins, as a conceptual starting point for his artistic investigations. This ancient Indian drink was prepared with a strange plant from the mountains. Lore has it that those who drank it could become enlightened, achieving happiness and immortality.

This distinctive artist recommends we spend a night in the floating hotel room that is part of the installation. For the low, low price of 1000 euros a night, you can go alone or accompanied by one person and spend the night in the museum. The price includes breakfast and a nice minibar. And for those mere mortals who can not pay this price, you can still enjoy the rest of the exhibition, which is no less interesting. Höller has formulated the exhibition as a type of laboratory, with three-dimensional models. Some fungi and the aforementioned large floating hotel are the most striking elements of the exhibit.

David Drebin exhibit in Berlin

icon1 berlinblogger | icon2 Berlin | icon4 11 19th, 2010| icon32 Comments »

On November 27th the exhibition “The Morning After” opens. It will take place at the Camerawork Gallery in Berlin and will present the latest work of photographer David Drebin.

david drebin exhibit
This artist is known for the epic and theatrical opulence of his imagery. In his images we see women staged in stunning urban panoramas before, made up in such a way that the atmosphere shows evidence of an extravagant imagination. His clients include major brands like American Express, Mercedes, Nike, and magazines such as Marie Claire and the New York Times.

Known for his compelling and very sexy photographs, Drebin began to make his name as a fashion and advertising photographer in the 90′s after graduating from the famous Parsons College in New York. He has always been fascinated by people and their most intimate secrets; hence the individual and their essential mystery occupy a central part in the work of Drebin. Thus, his work gains a cinematic gloss that few photographers manage to capture in their images.

Drebin is a photographer who loves to tell stories. His goal for his pictures is to inspire the imagination of the viewer. He allows them, if only in fantasy, to travel to the most extravagant and glamorous or remote sites and times, thanks to the incredible beauty that Drebin masterfully portrays in his photographs. His purpose is to reach the viewer emotionally, evoke laughs or attraction, sadness or happiness.

Künstlerhaus Bethanien is a renowned artist residency in Berlin, which also operates a platform for art and curatorial projects, involving major German and international art institutions. The aim of this space is to promote contemporary art and contribute to the dissemination of works created by emerging artists through the creation of a strong international working environment and high profile events and expos.

It also offers technical and theoretical advice, organizes workshops and training seminars in visual arts and exhibitions and events are organized to show the works of resident artists. No individual applications are accepted and each artist selected was previously proposed by one of the institutions that work with this center, which is why it is a highly competitive program.

Each year, this space houses between 20 and 30 artistic, cultural projects, workshops or seminars of international importance, in which the protagonists involved are key artists, teachers, curators and critics in the contemporary art world. One of the most important activities of this center is the advice to artists, who receive assistance regarding their projects, potential collaborations, organizations and sponsors who could fund their ideas, as well as scholarships, prizes and national and international calls. Also published books and materials on the activities carried out in space.

Unlock the secrets of Testosterone.

icon1 berlinblogger | icon2 Berlin | icon4 11 17th, 2010| icon32 Comments »

Some men may suffer sexual attention deficits, but not all. To investigate the origin of this problem, scientists conducted a study in which, surprise, it was shown that levels of testosterone, the hormone produced by the testicles, were partially responsible for erectile dysfunction and low sexual desire. In addition, it was also shown that these levels varied by country, ethnicity and subject by almost 20%. This conclusion may be a turning point in terms of research carried out on male sexual problems.   Male sexual problems are, without a doubt, a highly marketable segment of the health industry in the infancy of its profitable exploitation.
testosterone secrets

Studies like this can alter diagnosis, treatment and societal perceptions of such conditions. Researchers were unable to account for the 20% variation in testosterone levels, although there are many guesses- that it may be due to the environment, lifestyle, or diet. For example, it has been shown that Asians living in the United States have the same hormonal measures as other U.S. citizens; however, they do not have the same levels as Asians residing in Asia.  This means that environmental and dietary factors probably play a very large role in hormone levels.
The multicultural reality of modern-day Germany means you can find a wide variety of men, some with more testosterone in their blood and some with less. There are also many ways to meet these fine specimens.  Rent apartments in Berlin and you can see with your own eyes (and other senses) the varying levels of testosterone.  You are sure to find one who is man enough for your needs, and because Berlin is very culturally advanced, he may even say please and thank-you, despite his high levels of testosterone.

To this day, Germany’s past is far from forgotten. Hitler and National Socialism remain touchy subjects even 65 years after the end of World War II and nobody will forget the terrible past: discrimination, genocide, war. We continue to ask ourselves how it got that far. How did a whole nation fall for the promises of a man? How did “the Führer” rise to power so quickly and become such powerful god-like persona for the Germans? Hitler’s regime was dictatorship par excellence and his actions continue to haunt us.

exhibition hitler berlin

Even though there have been numerous exhibitions on the “Third Reich”, concentration camps, the Holocaust, and war crimes of that time, nobody dared to break the taboo on presenting an exhibition on the man that was responsible for all of it. Post-war, his name in public always guarantees uproar and protest.

For the first time ever since the end of World War II, the German Historical Museum will present an extensive exhibition on Hitler which examines the phenomenon Hitler, the German society at the time and its significance for the rule of National Socialism. There is no doubt that Hitler took advantage of the vulnerable state that the Germans where in after World War I: Socio-political conditions and the desperate need for someone to take charge. His dictatorship rested on mass enthusiasm and approval, but also on violence, murder and physical annihilation.

The decision to present an exhibition like this took some courage and the curators fear protests and jubilant Neo-Nazis. The composition and content weren’t easy to plan. Under no circumstances the organizers want to glorify Hitler or justify any excuses that were brought up after the war. The exhibition tries to answer the questions that we all have about this topic showing the interconnection between Hitler’s personal power and the hopes and interests of large sections of German society. Don’t miss out on this historically significant event! The exhibition opened on October 15th and will run until February 6th 2011.

Wim Wenders: Faraway, So Close!

icon1 berlinblogger | icon2 Berlin | icon4 11 11th, 2010| icon35 Comments »

Seen from the Angel of Victory, the skies reflect the poetry of Wim Wenders’ films, especially Faraway, so close, which summarizes the deep feelings of a generation that lived through the fall of the Berlin Wall.

wim wenders so faraway so close

Wenders, who is part of the “New German Cinema” movement. In 1993 his film traces the emergence of a New Berlin at the very beginning of the great urban transformation suffer after unification after 1989.

Wenders´ films are full of light, color and space.  They are defined by their specific geography and work to expose the complex history held in the space.

”Faraway, so close” is a sequel to “Wings of Desire,” and we once again find ourselves in a philosophical fantasy land with much to teach us about ourselves as we explore the hidden realities of a phoenix-like yet scarred Berlin.

Angels and real characters, such as former President Gorbachev or musician Lou Reed, narrate their reflections on this unsettling time of change as they wander the German city.

Why not take a spiritual journey to contemporary Berlin, where modern and old intertwine, where the flow between the past and present fills the bars, restaurants and apartments in Berlin.

Watching  Wenders´ films will familiarize you with the attitudes and history of this exemplary modern city. Walk through the Branderburg Gate, through the wide and endless avenues arising from the majestic tower at  Alexander Platz, to enjoy shopping for all the new digital technology or antiques, or out to eat at the wonderful contemporary German restaurant VAU, where each dish is made with fresh seasonal products by Chef Kolja Kleeberg.

Nov 10

On October 15th the 4th Month of Photography has begun in Berlin which will run until November 25th and for the first time the organizers came up with the idea of a mandatory theme to give the whole event more significance in the media: “Modern Times, New Pictures”, a theme focusing on photography as an instrument of modernisation.

lazlo moholy nagy berlin

Under this event and this topic the Martin-Gropius-Bau will present an exhibition of László Moholy-Nagy starting on November 4th. From 1923 until 1928 he was a professor at the Bauhaus school. Throughout his career, he became proficient and innovative in the fields of photography, typography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and industrial design, but his main focus was photography. The term the “New Vision” gained importance through his belief that photography was able to create a way of seeing the outside world that the human eye could not. He also invented the ‘photogram’ – the direct exposure of photographic or film paper, without any use of the camera.

The exhibition is titled “The Art of Light”, as light played an essential role in his work. He developed an aesthetic theory of light – light as a matrix of art and art as light. To him any kind of art was only meaningful if it somehow reflected light. The distinction between production and reproduction is a basic theme of his art. Being such an important figure in Modernism the ability of art to create something new was highly important to him. With over 200 works, the Martin Gropius Building is showing Moholy-Nagy’s oeuvre comprising paintings, photographs (both black and white and in colour), photograms and collages, films and graphics.

The exhibition will run until January 16th, 2011 and during the Month of Photography you will be able to see many other photo exhibitions throughout the whole city. The only thing that’s left for you to do is to book a ticket and rent a apartments in Berlin to see the world with a “New Vision.”

Detox your body naturally

icon1 berlinblogger | icon2 Berlin | icon4 11 8th, 2010| icon33 Comments »

Ribwort plantain  is one of my favorite herbs for detoxifying and energizing. This common field grass has been used for centuries for a variety of purposes and is known strong healing properties, and also is very good at stimulating the digestive system. You can prepare an infusion and take it first thing in the morning before breakfast.  For a well rounded detox regimen, you can follow it up with one of the most cleansing fruit juices out there, Pomelo.  In general, it’s a smooth move to incorporate fresh squeezed juices with no additional sugar added into your diet, especially in the morning.  It’s a great way to jump-start your metabolism and help those pounds melt off.
detox your body
Another fruit known for its cleansing properties is Pineapple. Try including it one or two times a week as a dessert or between meals to help brighten skin, aid digestion and cleanse the liver.

As far as vegetables are concerned, the more the merrier, but make a special effort to include the following on a detox diet. Among the most effective detox vegetables are Watercress, Cabbage (raw in salads dressed with lemon, like watercress), Bok choi, dandelion greens, celery and a fruit usually included in the vegetable group, the Tomato! But without doubt the most detoxifying and purifying the blood is the artichoke. All this, with a good vitamin supplement and a daily dose of Propolis, will definitely help you turn over a new leaf this fall.  Since your feeling extra vigorous, why no take a getaway, rent apartments in  Berlin and seek out the farmer’s markets full of top quality organic produce!

I always found tattooing interesting and it has always fascinated me as an art form but up until recently I didn’t think of tattoo artists as artists. I came to realize that many tattoo artists don’t only pride themselves with the amazing work they do on bodies but many of them have found other artistic ways and materials to express themselves that merit seeing . However, often these artists only get the opportunity in show work in conventions, not in gallery spaces. I haven’t heard of many other places other than AKA Berlin where art and body art coexist in such a harmonic symbiosis.

aka tattoo berlin art

Since tattoos and piercing fall under the category of body art AKA Berlin serves as a space where art and body can be equally appreciated! The concept of AKA Berlin is innovative and redefines the possibilities of a body art gallery.

Other than the resident tattoo artists, AKA Berlin regularly hosts interesting tattoo artists to give them the opportunity to show their work and expand their clientele, and give Berliners the chance to get tattoos done by an impressive and varied roster of international artists. Besides tattooing, artists can display their other art work in featured exhibitions. This space allows tattoos and “high” art to interact, lending a different artistic and creative perspective to each.

It’s great to see that tattooing  has begun to loose the stigma of delinquency and lower social status as it gains more attention as a creative and aesthetic art. Where else than in a pulsing city like Berlin would you find a place like AKA Berlin? So if you are thinking about some new ink but are uninspired, I suggest you rent  apartments in Berlin and go to Neukölln to make an appointment. AKA Berlin is definitely worth checking out, and not just for passionate tattoo fans.
