For six days, beginning on July 7, the heart of Berlin moves and vibrates with the Classic Open Air Festival, held in Gendarmenmarkt since 1992. The festival, where the music is the honored guest, has been defined by its organizers as a “feast for the senses”, where the ears and sight receive the gift of an entire show.

The Classic Open Air Festival was part of the activities arising with the reunification of Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991. The choice of the Gendarmenmarkt as place to stage concerts is due to its  architectural grandeur and history dating back to the seventeenth century. During the period of the GDR  it was renamed Platz der Academie, restoring its original name after the reunification.

The opening show will be conducted by Herbert Feuerstein, who will present the grand  concerto that will travel through 20 songs  of 20 concerts, of 20 years of the Classic Open Air Festival. This show will close with a amazing display of  fireworks

On Friday the  8th  an special event will be presented: An opera called An Italian Night. This show will present arias, duets and choruses of Rossini, Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, Catalani and Puccini played by the Argentine tenor Jose Cura,  considered the fourth best tenor in the world, who is also director and composer, along with the German soprano Barbara Krieger, accompanied by the Concert Choir of New Berlin and the Elbe Philharmonic Hall

On Saturday 9th  the morning is devoted to very young children and teenagers with their parents to see and hear the Classic Adventure of the great Sons. This work is a journey into music performed by the Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Berlin Wernigerode Gropiuslerchen. In the afternoon Carmina Burana,  will delight, not only because of its  music and the choirs of the composer Carl Orff, but also thanks to the amazing laser light show  that accompanies the staging.

No doubt the delight of many music lovers will be the concert on July 11th, by the German hard rock band Scorpions. This time they will be accompanied by the Potsdam  symphony orchestra ,  The Babelsberg Film Orchestra, who will perform symphonic rock. Symphonic rock emerged in the seventies due to the fusion of rock music and symphonic sounds.

As usual, the Classic Open Air Festival closes with a spectacular concert with this year’s London Philharmonic Orchestra, which will recreate the classic themes of the films of James Bond, 007, accompanied by the voice of British singer Mary Carewe and a show of light and color that will make this festival memorable.

Why does the human being feel the need to adopt a way of being which he or she was not born with? It is not necessity, or a form of being, nor a whim, nor a fad…it’s just that sometimes, nature isn’t as clever as it seems. And so, thousands of people find themselves “trapped” in the wrong body – in bodies with which they are unable to identify. And as these carry their own problems of identity, they also have to contend with the criticism and abuse from others.

It’s not fair; nobody has the right to overrule another person just because they do not fit in with what is considered “normal.” Many transsexuals, transgenders and transvestites suffer this “violation” daily without saying anything back… Sometimes this silence goes on forever, with some people learning from experience that if you speak up it can sometimes make the situation worse. One must be brave, and fight back at any form of abuse.

Life doesn’t go on forever; we have to make the most of every second we get, however and whatever we are… Difference will always exist, so we have to learn to adapt, and enjoy all that surrounds us. One place we are really allowed to live is Berlin. What a wonderful city – and the people are great too.

It is a city where you can enjoy both a weekend or a whole month. Full of contrasts, due to its historical past with the Second World War, the German capital is involved in all kinds of cultural movements. Each one of its streets is worth visiting, and each neighbourhood, because no one place is the same.
